ilmi Science Discovery & Innovation Center, one of the entities affiliated with the Mohammed bin Salman Foundation “Misk,” held a panel discussion titled “Can We Trust Machines?” as part of its participation in the eighth edition of Misk Global Forum 2024, held under the theme “By Youth, For Youth.”
The session explored the extent to which machines and robots can be relied upon to make critical decisions across vital sectors such as healthcare, law, and finance, as well as the ethical, human, and technological challenges associated with such decisions amid the rapid advancement of artificial intelligence and intelligent systems.
The session comes as part of ilmi Center’s efforts to foster dialogue around the future of science and technology, while creating interactive spaces for youth and interested audiences to explore major questions linked to scientific progress and its role in shaping the future of humanity and society.
The discussion also highlighted the importance of building scientific awareness among younger generations by addressing contemporary topics that touch everyday life and encourage participants to think critically about the relationship between humans and machines, as well as the limits of trust in technology-driven decisions.
The session further provided attendees with the opportunity to discuss key questions related to the future of artificial intelligence, including: When can machines be trusted? Who bears responsibility for their decisions? And how can societies strike a balance between benefiting from technology and preserving human values?
