ilmi Science Discovery & Innovation Center, one of the entities affiliated with the Mohammed bin Salman Foundation “Misk,” held a panel discussion titled “Attention vs. Apps” as part of its participation in the eighth edition of Misk Global Forum 2024, held under the theme “By Youth, For Youth.”
The session explored the hidden design mechanisms behind digital applications built to capture users’ attention, and how they influence the mind and daily behavior amid the growing presence of technologies and digital platforms in people’s lives, particularly among youth.
The discussion examined the relationship between attention and technology by highlighting the mechanisms applications use to keep users engaged for longer periods, as well as the cognitive, psychological, and social implications that result from this interaction. The session also emphasized the importance of strengthening users’ digital awareness.
The session further highlighted the role of individuals in engaging consciously with digital applications, and how users can move from being passive consumers to active contributors in shaping the policies of the digital future through understanding, accountability, and participation in discussions related to technology ethics.
Attendees were also given the opportunity to explore several important questions, including: How are applications designed to capture attention? What impact do they have on thinking and focus habits? And how can individuals build a more balanced relationship with the digital world?
Through this participation, ilmi Center reaffirms its commitment to delivering interactive learning experiences that inspire youth, encourage them to ask questions, and explore the relationship between science, technology, and society, enhancing their ability to understand future transformations and contribute to shaping them.
